Wedding anniversary: what to give, what to write, and how to celebrate it
A wedding anniversary usually raises three very practical questions: finding a gift that will not end up forgotten in a cupboard, writing something more personal than “happy anniversary”, and deciding how to celebrate the date itself. The traditional anniversary calendar helps with the first question, but it does not provide a good gift idea on its own.
At Love in Room, we mainly see what couples choose when they want to turn an anniversary into an experience. Our catalogue currently includes +1,000 places across 93 French departments and 132 cities, with a median nightly price of €190. That gives a useful benchmark when comparing an object, a restaurant, a family celebration or a night away together.
What should you give for a wedding anniversary?

The right gift depends first on your relationship with the couple. A husband or wife celebrating fifteen years of marriage should not choose the same kind of present as a child looking for something for their parents’ 30th anniversary. A friend attending an anniversary party has even less reason to buy something intimate.
For your husband or wife: give time together
For your partner, our recommendation is straightforward: choose an experience for two before buying another object, unless you already know exactly what physical gift they want. Jewellery bought out of habit, another bottle of perfume or a generic gift box can cost a lot without saying much about the relationship.
A night away works well because the gift also reserves time for the two of you. Across the Love in Room catalogue, the median price is €190 per night, and half of all listed places fall between €155 and €240. Among the 665 properties with a private hot tub, the median is just €199: only nine euros more than the catalogue-wide median.
With a €200 budget, we would choose the night with a private hot tub over a decorative object at the same price. For an important anniversary, spending the money directly on the evening or weekend usually creates a stronger memory.
For your parents: pay for something they would not arrange for themselves
If you are a son or daughter looking for an anniversary gift for your parents, avoid buying a symbolic object simply because it matches the traditional anniversary material. After twenty, thirty or forty years together, most households already contain enough tableware, ornaments and keepsakes.
Instead, pay for something your parents may hesitate to book for themselves: a night away, a good restaurant, a couples’ massage, theatre tickets or an activity followed by accommodation. If several children contribute, a budget of €200 to €300 already covers a night in a large part of the Love in Room catalogue, including many well-equipped properties.
Add a deadline or suggest two possible weekends. A gift voucher with no plan attached can sit in a drawer for six months; an experience that is already partly organised is far more likely to happen.
For friends: do not overstep
For friends, the answer is simpler: choose something they can share and stay outside the couple’s private territory. A well-chosen bottle, a meal, a photo album prepared by friends and family, or a contribution towards a weekend works better than selecting a romantic experience on their behalf.
For an anniversary celebrated with a larger party, €30 to €80 per household is already a meaningful contribution. For a milestone such as a 25th anniversary, six friends contributing €40 each create a €240 budget, enough to fund an experience rather than six small objects.
The gift should match your relationship with the couple. Friends and relatives can help create the opportunity; the couple should retain control over the intimate part of the celebration.

Use the anniversary material without automatically buying jewellery
The anniversary calendar becomes useful once the material is treated as a creative constraint. For the first anniversary, cotton does not require an expensive gift: embroider a sentence, date or the coordinates of an important place onto a pillowcase, towel or piece of fabric. The object remains connected to the anniversary while referring to something specific in the relationship.
For a fifth anniversary and its wood theme, a custom-made frame works better than a vaguely rustic ornament. Choose a photograph your partner would never think to print: your first home, a trip, a picture taken by one of your children or an ordinary moment that became important later. A €30 or €50 object built around the right photograph will usually mean more than a mass-produced “5th anniversary” gift box.
For a 10th wedding anniversary, traditionally associated with tin in the French calendar, the material gives you even more freedom. Print ten small photographs, one from each year, place them in a metal box and write one sentence on the back of each. The tin becomes discreet while the number ten gives the gift its structure.
For twenty years and porcelain, choose something that will genuinely enter everyday life. Two cups bought together during a weekend away, a dish painted with the children or one piece that comes out every year on the anniversary has more value in use than ornamental porcelain bought simply to follow a tradition.
At twenty-five years, silver creates the most obvious trap: assuming that you need to buy silver jewellery. We would rather restore and frame a wedding photograph, or collect twenty-five written memories from children, friends and relatives.
Use the material to shape the idea rather than allowing it to dictate the purchase. Set your budget first, choose the memory or experience next, then use the anniversary material to give the gift a theme.
Once your budget passes €150, compare the object you are considering with a night away for two. Love in Room lists accommodation in exactly that price range: a €190 median nightly price, €199 with a private hot tub, €180 with a spa bath, €199 with a sauna and €225 with a private pool. A Love in Room gift card lets you offer the night without choosing the property or weekend for the couple.
What should you write in a wedding anniversary message?

The weakness of generic anniversary messages has little to do with their length. “Happy wedding anniversary, wishing you many more happy years together” could be sent to a hundred different couples without changing a single word. A good wedding anniversary message contains one detail that belongs specifically to the people involved.
When writing to your husband or wife, start with a precise memory and say what it means now. When writing to your parents, focus on something their relationship created that you personally experienced. When writing to friends, stay with what you have actually witnessed rather than pretending to know the private workings of their marriage.
For your husband or wife
Eleven years after that dinner when we missed the last train, I would still choose to be stranded with you. Thank you for everything we have built since then, including the plans that went completely wrong. Happy anniversary to us.
Three sentences are enough. Keep the detail about the train and cut any extra romantic formula: the memory already carries the message.
For your parents
Happy anniversary to you both. When I think about your marriage, I mostly think about the home you built around us, the routines, the meals and all the memories that came with them. Thank you for the story we were lucky enough to grow up inside.
A son or daughter does not need to write like a spouse. Write about what their marriage produced in your own life: a home, Sunday lunches, the same holiday destination for fifteen years or a family tradition everyone still follows.
For friends
Happy anniversary to you both. Here’s to many more trips, long dinners and evenings that end much later than planned. Enjoy the day and everything you have built together.
For a friend, three personal lines beat a solemn declaration copied from the internet.
How to wish someone a happy anniversary in two lines

For a text message, WhatsApp message, flowers or a small card, choose one idea and add the names or number of years. Two targeted lines are enough; stacking several romantic formulas usually makes the result less personal.
“Happy anniversary to you both. Twenty years later, you still make a very good team.”
“Ten years today. I would take all ten again with you.”
“Happy wedding anniversary. Make sure you keep some of today just for the two of you.”
“Twenty-five years already, and a lot of memories behind you. Here’s to building an even bigger collection.”
“One year married, many more years of knowing each other, and still plenty left to experience together.”
“Have a wonderful anniversary. Use the date as an excuse to disappear together for a while.”
For a dating anniversary, the same rule applies. Replace wedding language with a detail from the first meeting or first date; the restaurant, street, train station or badly chosen film usually gives you a better message than a romantic quote.
How should you celebrate your wedding anniversary?
An anniversary has two practical functions: marking the actual date and creating an opportunity to spend time together. When schedules are simple, combine them. When children, work shifts or childcare make the weekday difficult, keep a small ritual on the exact date and move the main celebration to the nearest workable weekend.

We recommend not ruining a good night away simply to respect a Tuesday evening at all costs. Dinner at home, a letter or opening a bottle on Tuesday keeps the date meaningful; Friday or Saturday gives you enough time to leave without spending the evening watching the clock. For couples with children, organise childcare before booking accommodation, otherwise the preparation quickly becomes the most stressful part of the anniversary.
Location makes a large difference. Love in Room currently lists +1,000 addresses across 93 French departments and 132 cities, so couples in much of France can find an experience without turning the night into a long-distance trip. A nearby stay reduces travel time, avoids taking a day off work and makes childcare far easier to arrange.
Then choose the property according to what you actually intend to use. If you plan to spend most of the evening inside the room or suite, equipment matters more than decorative styling: 665 properties have a private hot tub, 424 a sauna, 470 a spa bath and 224 a private swimming pool. For a more erotic setting, 123 listings include a secret room, with a median nightly price of €200.
An overnight stay is not compulsory either. Love in Room lists 184 day-use properties, with a median price of €180. That works particularly well when childcare ends at 7 p.m., one partner works nights or neither person wants to sleep away from home.
At the same budget, prioritise proximity and the facilities you will genuinely use. A spectacular suite four hours away turns one evening into a small travel project; somewhere less than an hour from home gives you more actual time together. The Love in Room luxury accommodation selection gives a practical idea of what different budgets can buy.
Renew your vows, or try the two-envelope idea

Renewing your vows makes sense for couples who genuinely want to gather friends and family around a major anniversary, especially at twenty-five, forty or fifty years. Treat it as an event from the start: guests, food, photographs, clothes, flowers, venue and possibly accommodation all carry a cost. With only 20 guests and a food budget of €35 per person, the meal already reaches €700 before anything else has been added.
Our recommendation is to organise a ceremony only when the couple genuinely wants that gathering. Recreating a second wedding because the anniversary number feels important introduces a large amount of logistics into a date that was originally about two people.
For couples who want to mark the anniversary without organising an event, the two-envelope idea costs little more than a few sheets of paper. Each person writes two short notes:
in the first envelope: three things from the past year they want to remember;
in the second: three things they would like to do together before the next anniversary.
Open the first envelope that evening. Seal the second, write next year’s anniversary date on it and put it away until then. In twenty minutes, you have a record of the year, several precise memories and three shared plans for the twelve months ahead.
If you are hesitating between an expensive ceremony and something very simple, start with the envelopes and spend the budget on time together. For a wedding anniversary, the money usually goes further when it creates the memory rather than financing the machinery of the celebration.
